Tessa Collins, M.D.

Dr. Collins received her bachelor of arts in psychology, cum laude, from Sonoma State University. She then headed to the University of California – San Francisco School of Medicine, where she received her doctor of medicine. Dr. Collins completed her residency in anesthesiology at the University of California – San Francisco. She remained at UCSF as full-time faculty from 2003-2005. She then joined East Bay Anesthesiology Medical Group at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Oakland and Berkeley campuses (Sutter affiliate hospitals).

While at ABSMC, Dr. Collins was engaged in several Sutter-wide and local hospital initiatives. She was the regional physician lead and anesthesia subject matter expert for the EPIC implementation at all Sutter affiliate hospitals. In this role, she worked with analysts to create surgery and anesthesia order sets in EHR to support perioperative pathways and workflow.

When Sutter began working on transforming their leadership through Lean, Dr. Collins was asked to participate. She completed Lean Leader certification, and participated both as a team member and leader in numerous Kaizen events.

Dr. Collins participated in numerous committees at ABSMC including: Risk Management, Quality Assurance/Peer Review, CJR bundled care redesign, Glycemic Management, NSQIP collaborative and Readmissions Committee. She was also a member of Medical staff leadership while she served as Chair of the Anesthesia department.

In 2012, Dr. Collins worked with colleagues to develop a proposal for a Perioperative Clinic for surgical patients at ABSMC. This plan was accepted and Dr. Collins served as Medical Director leading a staff of anesthesiologists and nurse practitioners to evaluate and optimize patients before their surgical procedure. She developed integrated pathways to promote the implementation of best practice and evidence-based protocols.

Dr. Collins made the decision to relocate to Portland, Oregon, last summer for the great outdoor access and improved quality of life found in Oregon. She currently serves as Medical Director of the Perioperative Clinic for Providence Portland Medical Center and will be working on developing the center’s clinic and surgical home model.
